Kevin from over at JKOnTheRun has just embarked on what he calls as the web-only challenge, which is a challenge to see how far he would go without relying on any dedicated software clients and turning to the browser in order to get any work done. In a way, I've already been engaged in this challenge myself, since for the last two months that I've been working as a freelance writer all I've ever really needed was a browser and a decent Internet connection. Except of course for MS Paint (which I use to resize the photos in my posts) and MS Notepad (for some occassional rough drafts), I rarely even look at the other apps in my laptop anymore. A browser is all that I need.
OK, maybe I still need a few other software clients, such as iTunes (so I can put songs and movies on my iPod Touch), Windows Media Player (for entertainment), and Nokia PC Suite (to connect to the Internet) but other than these, the only thing I ever really need all the time is Firefox. Web-based apps make short work of my tasks nowadays.
I remember when I was working as an Editorial Assistant for a local community web site back then, and the Head Writers asked for their own licensed copies of Microsoft Office 2007. I thought to myself, "Idiots! Notepad is everything you need!" and decided that it wasn't the nicest thing to say, so I just carried on with my work on Notepad and kept updating that community site's blog from inside through Wordpress.
Now, the blogs that I write for have their own content management system, and it works directly on the browser. I've never even opened MS Office since I left college over a year ago. Really.
So about this web-only challenge thing, although I've already been doing this myself for quite a while now, I'm interested in going it with other individuals especially if they're in the same line of work as I am, and they produce content as well. I'm sure I'll learn a lot of new things that I would otherwise have skipped alone.
So yeah, Kevin, if you're reading this, I'm in. Cheers!
